My deepest and sincere condolences to the Avery family for the unimaginable sadness and loss of Matthew.
I am Matt’s industry supervisor. My name is Tony Arioli. I met Matt about two years. At the time, Matt showed an interest in a Masters degree project at Victoria University. Professor Domenico Caridi introduced me to Matt because Matt was interested in a science project where he could research a topic with high significance for agriculture combined with chemistry. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to meet and assist Matt in his Masters research project.
I still remember meeting Matt for the first time. My first impression was that Matt was very respectful, a great listener and asked intelligent questions. I could see that Matt was keen to find an interesting project. Matt decided on a challenging project to discover and characterise key actives in a novel seaweed extract (Seasol) used in agriculture.
On a regular basis Matt, Professor Domenico Caridi (Matt’s academic supervisor) and I would meet to discuss Matt’s project, advise and answer questions to support Matt’s Masters degree studies. Matt was always on time and prepared. Matt was diligent by reading the scientific literature for new ideas and searching for new chemical methods to characterise the seaweed extract. Matt really enjoyed the scientific project and was intrigued by the complex chemistry of the extract. Matt was a pleasure to work with and had a great professional work ethic.
I remember meeting Matt in the University laboratory where he worked. He proudly showed me around the laboratory work bench area and the cutting-edge technology instrument he used for chemical characterisation. He spoke confidently about his project results and explained the science in a way that demonstrated his new knowledge. During our meeting it was obvious to me that Matt was interested in agriculture and science, and was a high achiever.
Matt asked lots of great questions about how to improve agriculture, how seaweed extracts work and then started to form his own ideas and hypothesis. He was keen to improve and contribute to the science that would improve agriculture. By the next meeting Matt had consulted the scientific research about how plants respond to stress in the field and devised a hypothesis about how his research would help to discover a new mechanism that agriculture would rely upon. Then he set about refining the hypothesis and discovering the key biologically active molecules in Seasol seaweed extract.
During Matt’s project, I was grateful to see Matt make excellent research progress and mature as a student into a competent scientist. Matt continually displayed all the characteristics of kind, thoughtful and considerate person. Matt was planning to do a PhD degree so he could continue his research career. I will always remember Matt for his engaging insights and his intelligence, and his natural intuition and talent for chemical and plant research. Matt was a wonderful person, and I will miss him. I am grateful and proud to have the opportunity to work with Matt and call him a friend.
