Michael was an old school friend of mine from Broken Hill High & we kept in touch via ‘BHHS Golden Oldies’ over many years. Michael rang me in mid September & we had a long chat. He told me he was in Palliative Care in Jacaranda & that he was in no pain. We reminisced about old days but he asked me not to tell anyone about his call as he did not want to deal with explanations! I respected that wish. He told me that he had a soft spot for me (a migrant from UK in Class 2AG) while I told him I had a crush on him!! Michael was highly respected at school & not just for his sporting prowess. I recall being dinked home on his bike after getting the school hall floor ready for a social. I recall how devastated Michael was after Sue’s illness & death.
I kept my eye open for any tributes for Michael on the internet but obviously not for long enough & it was not until today when I was preparing to answer Christmas emails from old school friends that I found this page. Please extend my sincere sympathy to Michael’s family.

I am not sure if my message went through as I may have scrolled down & it disappeared. I would appreciate it if you would be able to let me know as I realise it might be some time before it appears. I would like to make a tribute. Thank you

Dearest McHugh family. We’re so very sad that you’ve lost your father/grandfather. I fondly remember visiting Jumbo many years ago as he generously entertained us all on our way to a gig in Broken Hill. A few beers and a spin on the ride-on lawn mower – what could possibly go wrong? Our love goes out to James, Jen, Tehya, Kianne and the rest of the extended McHugh family. Much love, Owen, Ruth, Ella and Sebastian.
